Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton: I lost my sense of self… but I have returned

MELBOURNE, Australia — Lewis Hamilton mentioned that there were moments during his inaugural season with Ferrari when he “lost sight” of his identity, but he assured that fans will not witness that version of him again.
The British driver’s transition to Ferrari in 2025 did not meet expectations, as the seven-time world champion was unable to secure a podium finish at any grand prix.
As the year concluded, Hamilton’s morale and performance declined, leading him to undertake a digital detox during the off-season; however, he has clearly returned to the 2026 season revitalized.
“[It’s down to] a combination of factors,” Hamilton stated. “The break was very beneficial. It was my environment. It was the individuals I was surrounded by. It’s not my first experience, so I understand how to turn things around, although it’s not always easy to do so. But I consistently emphasize the importance of fostering a positive mental attitude. That’s what I concentrated on during my winter break.
“Much of it stemmed from training. I was training intensely from Christmas Day. Additionally, knowing that I have faith in myself, that I’ve put in more effort than anyone else around me. Rediscovering myself was also a significant aspect of it.
“I think I temporarily lost sight of who I was. That version of me is gone. So you won’t see that individual again.”
He further remarked: “I feel fantastic arriving here. Training has been excellent. The collaboration with the team has been remarkable.
“Changes in my personal environment, in how I engage with the team, and how the team operates are much smoother than they were last year.”
Hamilton has made one significant adjustment ahead of the new season, parting ways with 2025 race engineer Ricardo Adami. He has yet to announce a permanent replacement, with Carlo Santi stepping in on an interim basis.
Following a challenging and winless 2025 season, Ferrari seems to have entered the new year in a markedly improved competitive state.

Preseason testing indicated that the Italian team has produced a strong car and engine in line with the new regulations.
Hamilton expressed that everything feels more instinctive as he embarks on his second season with the Italian team.
When asked about the difference a year of experience has made, he replied: “Massively. It’s a different experience compared to the first year, and it feels much more pleasant coming in after spending a year with the team, grasping the culture, understanding the dynamics, and discovering ways to collaborate. I believe we are in a good position as a team now, and I feel very connected with the team today. So, yes, much happier.”
