Chinese Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton calls Kimi Antonelli’s record pole an ‘impressive accomplishment’

SHANGHAI, China — Lewis Hamilton remarked that Kimi Antonelli’s record pole position is a fitting recognition of his approach to his early Formula 1 career.
Antonelli has become the first teenager in F1 history to achieve this milestone, and at 19 years and 201 days, he surpassed Sebastian Vettel’s record set during the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.
Antonelli outperformed his Mercedes teammate George Russell, while Hamilton secured third place for Ferrari.
Hamilton’s transition to the Italian team prompted Mercedes to promote Antonelli to F1 last season.
“First of all, I want to extend a big congratulations to this young man here, Kimi,” Hamilton stated following the session. “It’s an incredible accomplishment to step into this role. He took my seat and made a strong impact right from the start.
“It’s truly wonderful to witness his development, and he absolutely deserves this. It’s a remarkable record, and it will likely take some time for anyone to come close to it.”
Hamilton is statistically recognized as F1’s greatest driver, holding the record for the most pole positions and victories, while sharing the record of seven world championships with Michael Schumacher.
The Englishman notably secured numerous pole positions and wins in his debut season in 2007 at McLaren alongside Fernando Alonso.
When asked to draw comparisons between their circumstances and how Antonelli should navigate having a championship-capable car at a young age, Hamilton suggested he should continue his current approach.
“I don’t know,” Hamilton replied. “Different situations, but perhaps some parallels. I was a rookie competing against a two-time world champion who had extensive experience.
“I don’t believe he requires any guidance. He’s just achieved pole position, so there’s really nothing I can impart to him. He possesses all the insight he needs, and I think it’s crucial for him to simply enjoy the experience, continue with his current methods, stay focused, and keep pushing forward, which clearly aligns with his work ethic, so I’m confident he will excel.”
