U.S. Loses to Finland, 3-2, in World Junior Summer Showcase

WINDSOR, Ont. – In a closely contested match, Team USA was edged by Finland, 3-2, during the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase at WFCU Centre, despite contributions from Ethan Wyttenbach (Roslyn, N.Y.) and Sammy Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn.).

Finland took an early lead at 5:13 in the first period when Vilho Vanhatalo scored on a breakaway, sending a shot past U.S. goaltender Harrison Boettiger (Wheat Ridge, Colo.).

Wyttenbach equalized for the U.S. with 3:54 left in the period, delivering a wrist shot from the top of the slot that navigated through traffic and found the net.

Finland regained the advantage at 15:12 of the second period when Ilari Kapanen capitalized on a rebound opportunity just outside the crease.

Eetu Orpana extended Finland’s lead to 3-1 with a goal at 2:04 remaining in the second period.

Nelson reduced the U.S. deficit to 3-2 with a shorthanded goal, firing a shot from a sharp angle past Finnish goaltender Patrik Kerkola at 5:23 of the third period.

Boettiger concluded the game with 15 saves.

Team USA will continue its participation in the World Junior Summer Showcase tomorrow (July 30) against Sweden at 3 p.m. ET. All matches from the WJSS are available for live streaming and on demand on HNLive.ca.
