RICHMOND, B.C. – The U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team lost 2-1 in the shootout, while the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team suffered a 5-1 defeat on the second day of the Select Series against Canada at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
The concluding matches of the three-game series are scheduled for Saturday (Aug. 15), with the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team set to take the ice at 3:30 p.m. PT, followed by the U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team at 7 p.m. PT. The games will be available for live streaming on HNLive.ca.
U.S. Collegiate Select Team 1, Canada 2 (SO)
Canada opened the scoring less than two minutes into the first period, as Abby Stonehouse capitalized on a neutral-zone turnover, finding the top corner during a 2-on-1 opportunity just 1:49 into the match.
Team USA was awarded consecutive power plays, but despite several good opportunities, they were unable to score. The teams ended the first intermission tied at 11 shots on goal.
The second period continued in a similar fashion to the series, featuring strong defensive efforts and crucial saves from both goalies. The U.S. increased their offensive pressure, outshooting Canada 15-9 in the middle frame, but Eve Gascon maintained the 1-0 lead heading into the third period.
Early in the third period, during a power play, Ava Thomas (Downington, Pa./Boston College) fired a shot from the slot that narrowly missed the net. The U.S. sustained their offensive pressure, and with 11 minutes left in the game, Molly Boyle (Scituate, Mass./Yale University) won a faceoff cleanly, delivering a back-door pass to Rose Dwyer (Wynnewood, Pa./Cornell University), but Gascon executed a sliding save to keep Team USA off the scoreboard.

Ava Lindsay (Minnetonka, Minn./University of Minnesota) equalized the game at 1-1 with 8:36 remaining in the third period, when a sharp-angle shot slipped past the goaltender. With neither team able to score again, the match proceeded to a shootout after a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime.
In the shootout, Canada’s Chloe Primerano and Caitlin Kraemer found the net, securing a 2-1 victory for Canada.
Uma Corniea (Edina, Minn./Princeton University) recorded 33 saves in goal. The U.S. outshot Canada 38-34. Team USA was 0-4 on the power play and 2-0 on the penalty kill.
U.S. Under-18 Select Team 1, Canada 5
Canada began the scoring on a power play just before the halfway point of the first period. Adrianna Milani assisted Megan Mossey, who scored in the top corner, giving Canada a 1-0 advantage. Milani added a second goal for Canada just 12 seconds into another power play, extending the lead to 2-0 with 2:59 left in the first period.
Canada netted its third power-play goal of the game just under six minutes into the second period when Mossey scored again from close range, increasing the lead to 3-0. Canada capitalized on its fourth power play of the match, with Madison Levesque scoring to take a 4-0 lead into the final period.
Team USA managed to score with 3:34 remaining in the game when Aubryn Monter (North Ridgeville, Ohio) pushed a loose puck into the net, reducing the deficit to 4-1. Canada added a fifth goal with less than a minute left, finalizing the score at 5-1.
Allie Callinan (Wayzata, Minn.) made 23 saves in goal. Canada outshot the U.S. 28-24. Team USA was 0-4 on the power play and 1-5 on the penalty kill.
