RICHMOND, B.C. – The U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team lost their first match of the 2026 Select Series against Canada, 1-0, while the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team was defeated by Canada, 5-2, at the Richmond Olympic Oval on Wednesday.
The second game of the three-match series will take place tomorrow (Aug. 13), with the U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team facing Canada at 3:30 p.m. PT, followed by the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team competing against Canada at 7 p.m. PT. The matches can be streamed live on HNLive.ca.

The initial period saw both teams engage in a balanced contest, and despite Team USA having three power-play chances, they went into the intermission without scoring. Canada outshot the U.S. 10-8 during the first 20 minutes.
The defensive struggle persisted into the second period, with limited chances for both sides. With 13:48 left in the frame, Canada’s Abby Stonehouse received a pass at the blue line and broke away, but goaltender Ava McNaughton (Seven Fields, Pa./University of Wisconsin) successfully thwarted the attempt, maintaining a 0-0 tie.
Canada opened the scoring with 5:41 remaining in the second period when Rosalie Tremblay redirected a backdoor pass that slipped through the crease, giving them a 1-0 advantage.
The U.S. increased their offensive efforts in the third period, but Canadian goaltender Eve Gascon made several key saves to prevent Team USA from scoring, securing a 1-0 win for Canada.
McNaughton recorded 26 saves in goal. Canada outshot the U.S. 27-19. Team USA went 0-4 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill.

Canada earned the first power play of the game two minutes into the opening period, but Team USA’s penalty kill held firm to keep the score at zero. With 9:07 left in the first frame, Gia Orizotti (Vancouver, Wash.) advanced the puck into the offensive zone during a 2-on-1 situation, but her shot went over the net.
In the final moments of the first period, Madeline Call (Dedham, Mass.) managed to get behind the Canadian defense, resulting in a penalty shot as she approached the net. Jane Daley (Medfield, Mass.) took the shot, but it was saved by Maija St-Pierre.
Canada opened the scoring 3:07 into the second period when Madi Bryk found the net, but Team USA quickly responded with an equalizer just 35 seconds later. Hannah Rychley (Forest Lake, Minn.) brought the puck to the blue line before passing to Daley, leading to a 2-on-1. Daley’s shot from the center of the ice went through the five-hole, tying the game at 1-1.
Canada scored two goals in the last minute of the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the final frame. Avery Jones received a pass from behind the net and executed a one-time shot over the blocker, followed by Tatiana Deblois scoring in a similar manner just 20 seconds later.

Margaret Chudzinski (Westwood, Mass.) narrowed the gap to 3-2 with 8:47 remaining in the third period, receiving a pass from Reese Unklesbay (Lake Elmo, Minn.) near the point and firing a shot that knuckled past St-Pierre.
Canada successfully defended against a late U.S. power-play chance, before Adrianna Milani scored on a penalty shot with 4:33 left and added an empty-net goal with 21 seconds remaining, sealing a 5-2 victory for Canada.
Cecilia Wielenberg (Downers Grove, Ill.) made 21 saves in goal. Canada outshot the U.S. 26-25. The U.S. was 0-5 on the power play and 3-0 on the penalty kill.
