Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson commended the determination of his team after they defeated Welsh rivals Swansea 2-0, reinforcing their position in the Championship playoff race.

A superb first-half goal from the in-form Nathan Broadhead and a late own goal by Liam Cullen provided the home side with both the bragging rights and three points, allowing them to extend their lead to six points ahead of seventh-placed Southampton, who are set to face leaders Coventry on Saturday.

With celebrity co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac taking on commentary roles, there was added pressure on Parkinson following Tuesday’s 2-1 home loss to Hull. However, they secured a vital win against a team that could have narrowed the gap to the top six.

This victory came at the conclusion of a week that had already seen a thrilling extra-time FA Cup defeat to Chelsea, the loss to Hull, and news of injuries to key players Kieffer Moore and Libby Cacace, along with a suspension for George Dobson.

“Tonight’s performance showcased resilience and character, without a doubt,” Parkinson remarked.

“We shouldn’t overlook the challenging week we’ve experienced, with the emotional Chelsea match, the extra time, the unfortunate injuries to Kieffer and Libby, and losing Dobbo, coupled with Tuesday’s result.”

“To recover tonight demonstrates the true spirit and resilience of all the players, staff, and supporters. Three home games in six days is demanding for anyone, but I felt the supporters propelled us forward tonight, and securing the three points is what matters most.”

“Winning a Welsh derby and providing our supporters with the satisfaction of triumphing over one of our Welsh rivals is certainly significant as well.”

Wrexham faced a challenging match against a Swansea team that started strongly, with Arthur Okonkwo making a crucial save from Zan Vipotnik, and Malick Yalcouyé missing a late opportunity. They also had a penalty appeal denied after Gonçalo Franco was brought down by Dominic Hyam.

“We had good opportunities, but we missed the crucial moments,” Swansea manager Vitor Matos stated. “We pressured Wrexham, maintained control, created chances, but that final touch was lacking today.”

“Perhaps we were a bit unlucky as well. The incidents in the box with Franco were quite clear; that decision wasn’t the best, but it’s beyond our control. What we can manage is our training next week to prepare for Coventry [next Saturday].”

Broadhead’s goal would have been deserving of winning the match even before Cullen’s late own goal secured it. After receiving a precise reverse pass from Callum Doyle, the Wales international displayed excellent footwork to evade Cameron Burgess before finding the net past Lawrence Vigouroux.

“Cal knows I appreciate those reverse passes into space, and I was on the same wavelength,” Broadhead explained.

“I simply took it past the defender and slotted it in. I enjoy scoring goals and playing football, but today securing the three points was the priority … It was a significant win.”
