Virgil van Dijk acknowledges the pain of Liverpool’s FA Cup defeat: ‘However, perseverance is essential’

Liverpool’s captain Virgil Van Dijk expressed disappointment with his team’s performance and offered an apology to supporters following their FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.
The Reds’ aspirations of securing domestic silverware in what has been a challenging season were dashed by a 4-0 loss in the quarter-finals at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
After a balanced start to the match, the visitors faltered when Van Dijk fouled Nico O’Reilly, leading to a penalty converted by Erling Haaland.
Haaland later completed a hat trick as City scored four goals in a punishing 18-minute period that included halftime.
Van Dijk remarked: “I can only apologize to the fans for what we displayed, particularly in the second half.
“Clearly, we entered the dressing room with the right mindset, hoping to score quickly to make it 2-1 and shift the momentum.
“The opposite occurred, and coming back from 3-0 is undeniably challenging here — but we should not give up, and that may have been what transpired at a certain point.
“We disappointed our fans, ourselves, and the manager. The way we performed in the second half, especially, must be painful for everyone. It certainly pains me.”
The disappointing outcome heightened the pressure on manager Arne Slot ahead of a tough Champions League quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain.
Van Dijk stated: “It’s a collective issue, isn’t it? Of course, he bears responsibility as the manager, but we are the ones on the pitch who need to execute.
“The fact is, PSG are now waiting for us. I watched them a bit on Friday. It will be extremely challenging again. We need to be mentally prepared as soon as possible.
“I have been fortunate to represent Liverpool for many years. The key element we have always possessed is unity. Now, as we are in a bit of a transition, we need to rediscover that.
“It is tough to perform every couple of days without consistent unity.”

Liverpool’s difficulties have also cast doubt on their chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
They face a pivotal Premier League match against Fulham between their two encounters with PSG.
Van Dijk noted: “We have a duty to ourselves and, particularly, to the fans. If we aim to salvage something from this season, we must strive to deliver something remarkable in the next three matches.
“I’m contemplating how we can turn this around. We’ve been experiencing this for nearly 75 percent of the season.
“We tend to revert to games where we are outmatched in intensity or in our desire to compete. It’s a tough situation to accept, and everyone needs to reflect on their own performance.”
