Vinícius Júnior ‘currently’ beyond Flamengo’s financial capabilities

Flamengo currently lacks the financial resources to bring Vinícius Júnior back to the club, as stated by president Luiz Eduardo Baptista.

The Brazilian team garnered attention when it acquired its former midfielder Lucas Paquetá in January for a sum of €42 million (£37m, $50m), marking it as the most costly transfer in the annals of North and South American football.

However, the situation regarding Vinícius, who departed Flamengo for Real Madrid in 2018 for an estimated €45m, presents a different challenge.

“Vini is not an option for Flamengo,” Baptista informed Diario AS.

“I am certain that if there were a transfer involving Vinícius Júnior, it would entail a salary, at current market rates, significantly exceeding what we allocated for Paquetá.

“And that scenario is not feasible. He remains beyond Flamengo’s reach. Not at this time. Flamengo cannot afford it yet.”

Vinícius, 25, expressed last month his intention to remain at Real Madrid beyond 2027, when his contract is set to expire.

Nevertheless, discussions to extend his existing contract have reached an impasse.

When asked if this situation has provided Flamengo with a sliver of hope regarding the potential return of the Brazilian forward, Baptista remarked: “Vinícius will always be welcomed. When he comes to Brazil…we cherish Vini. However, Vinícius wishes to remain in Europe.

“Paquetá and Vinícius are at different stages in their lives. Paquetá has someone waiting for him at home every day [in Brazil], he has a family. Vinícius has no one awaiting him at home [with his family in Madrid].”
