St. Pauli did not provide a timeline for the potential return of the 25-year-old midfielder.
The injury occurred following a foul during a match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. The full severity of the injury was not disclosed until several days later after examinations.
Sands has made 14 appearances for the United States since 2021, with his most recent match being a starting role in a friendly victory over Australia last October.
The U.S. is co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and Mexico, with its first match scheduled for June 12 against Paraguay.
