Urda crash: Copa del Rey ties rescheduled to 13 November, three in international break

Following the Urda rail disaster, the RFEF has rescheduled the 24 postponed Copa del Rey first-round fixtures. These matches have been spread across a period from 29 October through to 13 November. Consequently, Valencia, Betis, and Celta are now set to contest their ties during the November international break.

Spanish football ground to a halt due to a national tragedy. The Royal Spanish Football Federation cancelled all Copa del Rey first-round ties originally scheduled for the evening of 28 October. Additionally, every other match within competitions managed by the federation was also postponed. This decision honored the victims of the rail crash that occurred in Toledo province.

According to reports from Público, a Renfe high-speed train collided with an Iryo high-speed train near Urda station. The accident resulted in 68 fatalities and 80 injuries. An investigating judge at the Orgaz court has initiated initial inquiries to determine the cause of the collision.

The impact of the shutdown extended beyond the main cup competition. The federation also delayed the nine first-round matches of the futsal Copa de España. Furthermore, the futsal draw that was scheduled to take place on 16:00 during 29 October was called off.

Three top-flight clubs will play during the international break

Valencia, Betis, Alavés, Celta, and Levante were the top-flight clubs scheduled for cup action that evening. Each club must now fit a rearranged tie into their existing schedules. These additional matches must be accommodated within an already busy calendar of league and European fixtures. The specific timing for these rescheduled games varies significantly between clubs.

Alavés are the first to play. They travel to face regional side Anaitasuna at 19:00 on Tuesday 3 November. Two days later, on Thursday 5 November, Levante will travel to play CD Tarancón.

Three other clubs must wait longer for their matches. Celta will conclude the round with an away game against Salamanca, kicking off at 21:00 on Friday 13 November. Meanwhile, Valencia and Betis are scheduled to play earlier in that same week. A tie originally intended for October will now be contested while national teams are on break.

Mallorca face cup and league games three days apart

Mallorca’s tie against CD Alcoyano is set to kick off at 21:00 on that same Thursday evening, following Levante’s match at Tarancón. A list of rearranged ties compiled by COPE identifies Mallorca as a Segunda División side rather than a top-flight club.

This league context is significant. Just three days after the cup tie, Mallorca will play an away match against Andorra in the second tier. The club is still pursuing automatic promotion. The rescheduled cup trip now occurs directly before a league fixture in this push.

The national first round was originally planned for a single evening on 28 October, when the season’s fixtures were drawn. According to the 2026/27 calendar, the Copa del Rey second round was initially set for 2 December.
