UEFA launches inquiry following Vinícius Jr. racism allegation

UEFA will look into the racism allegations made by Vinícius Júnior during Real Madrid’s match against Benfica.
Vinícius netted an impressive goal in a 1-0 victory in the first leg of a Champions League knockout round on Tuesday, but his claims against Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni overshadowed the achievement.
If found guilty of racial abuse under UEFA’s disciplinary regulations, Prestianni could face a suspension of up to 10 matches.
The governing body of European football announced on Wednesday that a special investigator has been designated to collect evidence.
“A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been appointed to examine allegations of discriminatory conduct during the UEFA Champions League 2025/2026 knockout playoff between Club Benfica and Real Madrid CF on 17 Feb. 2026,” the statement indicated.
“Additional information regarding this issue will be provided in due course.”
