U.S. President Donald Trump states that Iran is ‘welcome’ at the World Cup, according to Gianni Infantino.

United States President Donald Trump has conveyed to FIFA that Iran is “welcome” to participate in this summer’s World Cup, as stated by Gianni Infantino.

The team’s involvement in the finals has been brought into question following air strikes on Iran by the US and Israel on February 28.

The situation has escalated, involving other nations in the Middle East, with Iran responding by targeting U.S. military installations in the area.

Earlier this month, Trump expressed that he “really didn’t care” if Iran participated in the World Cup, but FIFA President Infantino asserts that Trump is in favor of the team’s inclusion after their discussion.

“This evening, I met with the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump to discuss the status of preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and the growing excitement as we are set to kick off in just 93 days,” Infantino shared on Instagram.

“We also addressed the current situation in Iran, and the fact that the Iranian team has qualified to take part in the FIFA World Cup 2026. During our talks, President Trump reaffirmed that the Iranian team is, of course, welcome to compete in the tournament in the United States.

Iran is scheduled to play all three of their group matches in the U.S. and could potentially face the co-hosts in the round of 32 if both teams secure second place in their respective groups.
