TRENDING RUMORS

– Liverpool is contemplating a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall, as reported by TEAMtalk. It is indicated that the Reds have expressed interest in the 20-year-old, who is also being considered by Aston Villa, with Spurs facing challenges in the Premier League this season. Juventus midfielder Khéphren Thuram, 24, is another target for scouts from Anfield, although securing a deal for him may prove more complicated, as Juve intends to offer him a contract extension. Brazilian reports have also suggested a €35 million bid for Palmeiras’ Allan Elias, 21.

– Manchester United is set to allow winger Jadon Sancho to leave for free upon his return from his loan at Aston Villa, according to The Sun. The management at Old Trafford has reportedly opted against providing a new contract for the 25-year-old, aiming to avoid ongoing high wages for a player not in their future plans. Sancho had signed a five-year contract worth £300,000-a-week when he joined the Red Devils for €85 million from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, and has been on loan at Dortmund, Chelsea, and currently Villa. However, this season he has struggled to make a significant impact at Villa Park, netting just one goal in 25 appearances.

– Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka is focusing on a transfer to Arsenal amid interest from various clubs across Europe. Bild reports that Bayer Leverkusen has recently entered the competition for the 31-year-old after reaching out to his representatives, but they may find it challenging to meet his salary, which exceeds €10 million per season. Goretzka, who is also being linked with Atletico Madrid and AC Milan, will become a free agent when his contract at the Allianz Arena concludes in June.

– Real Madrid has reportedly reached a verbal agreement to acquire Atlético Madrid C defender Aimar Garcia, according to AS. Garcia, 18, is expected to be out of contract this summer and has attracted the attention of Los Blancos head coach Alvaro Arbeloa. Additionally, Nicolo Schira states that Madrid defenders Antonio Rüdiger, 32, and David Alaba, 33, are nearing exits from the Bernabéu as free agents at the conclusion of their contracts in June. Recent reports have also associated Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté as a potential addition, with the 26-year-old available on a free transfer this summer.

– Barcelona presidential candidate Marc Ciria aims to bring back Inter Miami attacking midfielder Lionel Messi as part of an ambitious strategy to sign Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. In an interview with Cadena SER, Ciria stated: “We know that Messi’s future is linked to Barcelona. To sign Haaland, we must bring Messi back as a strategic partner.” Ciria is one of four candidates, including current president Joan Laporta, vying for election on March 15, but securing the 25-year-old Norway international may prove challenging after he signed an extension at the Etihad Stadium until 2034 in January 2025. Messi, 38, has also recently signed a new contract with Miami through 2028.

EXPERT TAKE

ESPN’s Liverpool correspondent Beth Lindop examines the midfield situation.

Enhancing the midfield this summer appears essential for Liverpool, especially given the uncertainty surrounding the long-term futures of Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo, and Alexis Mac Allister.

While Bergvall is undoubtedly a promising talent, Arne Slot’s squad already includes Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai, who are capable of filling that advanced midfield role, making a move for the Spurs player less logical.

Instead, it is probable that Liverpool will seek to acquire someone who can provide additional grit and physicality to the midfield. Thuram was linked with Liverpool in the summer of 2023, and both he and Allan fit the age profile the club typically targets. This is certainly a situation to monitor.
