MANCHESTER, England — Thomas Frank has stated that he has no plans to strip Cristian Romero of the captaincy, despite needing to defend the Argentina international for the second time within a week.
On Monday, Romero appeared to criticize Tottenham’s recruitment approach during the January transfer window by expressing on social media that the limited options in the squad are “disgraceful.”
Following these remarks, Frank supported Romero, who was appointed captain for the match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, but he was dismissed after just 29 minutes due to a reckless tackle on Casemiro.
Spurs subsequently suffered a 2-0 defeat.
When asked if he would contemplate removing Romero from the captaincy, Frank responded: “No. He is also remorseful about the incident. He apologized to his teammates in the locker room. He is one of our key players.”
Romero is now facing a four-match ban after receiving his second red card of the season.
Since his Tottenham debut in August 2021, he has been sent off six times across all competitions, more than any other player in the Premier League during that timeframe.
“Cristian, first and foremost, did not intend to follow through and earn a red card,” Frank remarked.
“He clearly aimed for the ball. Unfortunately, due to the rules, it results in a red card.”

In addition to his on-field indiscipline, Romero has made controversial statements on social media on two occasions.
After the 3-2 loss to Bournemouth in January, he also commented: “In times like this, it should be others stepping up to speak, but they don’t, as has been the case for several years now. They only appear when things are going well, to tell a few lies.”
When pressed on whether these incidents would lead Frank to reconsider Romero’s role as captain, the Spurs manager simply replied: “No.”
