England manager Thomas Tuchel seems to have dealt a significant setback to Harry Maguire’s World Cup aspirations by stating that he is still at least the fifth-choice centre back.

Maguire appeared to bolster his case for a spot on the flight to North America this summer with a strong performance during his return to the national team in Friday’s 1-1 friendly draw against Uruguay.

This marked his first appearance under Tuchel, where he captained the side in the second half, showcasing the composed play that has defined his England tenure.

The German coach recognized the strengths of the Manchester United defender but indicated that he remains behind Ezri Konsa, Marc GuΓ©hi, John Stones, and the injured Trevoh Chalobah in the selection hierarchy.

“I got exactly what I expected, solid, solid central defender play,” Tuchel remarked.

“That’s what he does. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air, and an asset for set pieces.

“I haven’t changed my perspective, but I see other players I prefer to start for us, and I see other players with a different profile ahead of him.

“I see Ezri Konsa ahead, I see Marc Guehi ahead. It’s no secret.

“I see Trevor Chalobah having a slight edge in terms of mobility.

“Also John Stones, but he has faced injuries, so he needed to join the camp.

“I needed to assess him in person to observe how he interacts within the group.

“He will remain with us.

“As I mentioned, he is an asset, of course, and can be crucial in a tournament, in knockout football, when defending a lead or chasing a game with crosses, long throw-ins, and set pieces.”

When asked if he would be included in the squad if it were to be named now, Tuchel responded: “If, if, if. We don’t need to announce the squad tomorrow. He had a solid game.

“He performed as he does for Man United. He did it right away. I’m very pleased with him. To be honest, I haven’t altered my view. I received everything I anticipated from him.

“If I have to name it tomorrow, we have numerous injuries; he could be included. Who else would be available in the centre of defence?”

Stones did not participate against Uruguay after experiencing calf discomfort during training, as the 31-year-old continues to deal with injury frustrations.

The Manchester City defender has made only five appearances for his club since the November international break and is finding it challenging to secure a consistent run of matches.

Despite this, Tuchel stated that he has “credit in the bank” and referred to him as “world class”.

Tuchel was questioned about whether he would make an exception for Stones regarding his limited playing time.

“I don’t know yet, but if you come to the World Cup, you should be fit,” Tuchel stated.

“So when he arrived [at camp], he was fit.

“He hasn’t had many minutes, but he possesses a level of game understanding.

“So the exception to the rule means that he doesn’t start often. I can see that because I’m a big admirer and I know what he contributes to the team in terms of personality, attitude, and quality game understanding.”
