Simeone matches Aragonés's LaLiga record as Atlético beat Levante

Atlético Madrid secured a 2-0 victory at Levante on Saturday, marking a significant milestone for Diego Simeone. Barcelona await in the next league fixture, and a win would place him alone at the top of the coaching records.

Atlético Madrid’s journey to Valencia concluded with a milestone for their manager. It required 565 LaLiga matches in charge for the Argentine to reach this mark, as confirmed by Club Atlético de Madrid.

The visitors led by one goal at halftime. Álex Baena provided the assist for their second goal. Previously, Morten Hjulmand had a goal disallowed by VAR in the 17th minute. Levante manager Luís Castro received a yellow card for dissent a minute later.

Levante created the chances, but Oblak prevented them from scoring.

The scoreline did not mirror the distribution of opportunities. Levante took 14 shots from inside the box, while Atlético managed 3. The hosts’ expected goals totaled 1.33, compared to 0.63 for the visitors.

Jan Oblak proved decisive. Around the tenth minute, he made a vital one-handed save to deny Dani Requena, as reported by Infobae (EFE). The goalkeeper concluded with a rating of 8.08.

Atlético controlled more possession, recording 54% of the ball and 560 passes against Levante’s 450. Simeone implemented two double substitutions. Jonathan David and Sørloth replaced Lee Kang-In and Julián Álvarez in the 67th minute. Le Normand and Lookman entered for Barrios and Baena in the 76th.

The result marked Atlético’s seventh consecutive league victory. They briefly assumed the top spot in the standings. The teams’ previous encounter, on 31 January 2026, concluded with a 0-0 result in Valencia.

Barcelona’s upcoming visit could allow Simeone to claim the record definitively.

Simeone already surpasses Aragonés in broader metrics at the club. Across all official competitions with Atlético, he has secured 479 wins from 813 games. Aragonés achieved 308 wins from 612 games in the same context. The club attributes eight trophies to Simeone as coach, two more than Aragonés’s six.

The upcoming weeks hold substantial importance. From 11 games, Atlético have recorded nine wins, one draw, and one defeat. Real Madrid occupy third place on 24 points from 10 matches.

Levante sit 17th on 10 points following their second consecutive loss. They travel to Tarancón for the Copa del Rey on Thursday 5 November. Their next league fixture is an away match against Celta de Vigo at 18:30 on Sunday 8 November.

Atlético face Bayern München in the Champions League on Tuesday 3 November. Their match against Barcelona is the final fixture of matchday 12, scheduled to kick off at 21:00 on Sunday 8 November. The Riyadh Air Metropolitano will host the game.
