MADRID — Sevilla terminated the contract of Argentine coach Matías Almeyda on Monday following yet another disappointment for the club in LaLiga this past weekend.

On Monday, Sevilla announced that Almeyda “has been relieved of his duties” after the team’s 2-0 defeat at home to Valencia on Saturday. The club expressed gratitude to him and his staff for their “efforts and professionalism” and extended their best wishes for the future.

Almeyda departs with the club positioned 15th in the league table, just three points above the relegation zone after 29 matches.

Sevilla has managed only one victory in their last eight fixtures, a 1-0 win against Getafe last month.

Almeyda, who previously managed the San Jose Earthquakes in MLS and AEK Athens in the Greek league, had been at the helm since last June, overseeing Sevilla in 32 matches across all competitions, achieving 10 wins, seven draws, and 15 losses.

On Saturday, the 52-year-old Almeyda was serving the fifth match of a suspension for his confrontation with match officials during a league match against Alaves in February.

Sevilla’s upcoming match is against last-placed Oviedo on April 5.
