Sevilla manager Almeyda receives extended 7-match suspension for confrontation with referee.

The Spanish football federation has imposed a seven-match suspension on Sevilla coach Matías Almeyda as of Wednesday.
The former San Jose Earthquakes manager received a red card late in Sevilla’s 1-1 home draw against Alavés in LaLiga on Saturday after an altercation with officials.
The disciplinary committee of the federation stated that the suspension comprises three matches for contempt and disrespect towards the referee; two matches for complaints directed at the officiating team; one match for failing to leave the field promptly after being sent off; and an additional match for behavior that disregarded public order.
Almeyda did not exit the field immediately following his red card, questioning the referee regarding the reason for his ejection.
He expressed regret for his conduct after the match but still sought clarification on the rationale behind his dismissal.
Sevilla described the sanction as “excessive” and announced their intention to appeal the decision.
This suspension means Almeyda will be unable to lead the team during a critical period in LaLiga for Sevilla, beginning with the upcoming match against Getafe, where their top-flight survival is on the line.
This marks the second instance this season in which the Argentine coach has been sent off; the first occurred during the visit to the Bernabéu for a match against Real Madrid in the final game of 2025.
