ATHENS, Greece — Seven supporters of the Greek soccer team PAOK Salonika lost their lives in a minibus accident in Romania while en route to a Europa League match in Lyon, as confirmed by Greece’s government on Tuesday.

“I am deeply affected by the tragic incident in Romania that resulted in the deaths of seven young compatriots,” stated Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “The Greek government and our embassy are closely collaborating with local authorities to provide all possible assistance.

“During these challenging times, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the PAOK community, alongside all Greeks,” Mitsotakis continued. “We all hope for a swift recovery for the injured. Our thoughts are with them.”

PAOK has been in direct contact with the government to coordinate support for the families and injured fans, and is sending club representatives to Romania.

PAOK president Ivan Savvidis referred to the incident as “an unspeakable tragedy,” expressing that “I am heartbroken by the unjust loss of young individuals, fans of our cherished team, who traveled to support PAOK.”

“I grieve alongside the families and millions of our fellow citizens,” Savvidis remarked.

Additionally, supporters’ groups from rival clubs Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, Aris, and others have shared messages of solidarity and condolences.

The match in France is set to take place on Thursday.

In a statement, Lyon conveyed its “sincere condolences” to PAOK and announced that a tribute would be held during Thursday’s game at Groupama Stadium.
