Morocco was unexpectedly awarded the Africa Cup of Nations title on Tuesday by appeals judges who reversed Senegal’s win in a tumultuous final held in January.

The Confederation of African Football announced that its appeals board determined Senegal is “declared to have forfeited the Final,” resulting in a 3-0 default victory for the host nation, Morocco, instead of Senegal’s original 1-0 win in extra time.

During the final on January 18 in Rabat, Senegal protested by leaving the field for 15 minutes during stoppage time, while fans attempted to breach the field when Morocco was granted a penalty.

Upon resuming play, Morocco’s Brahim Diaz had his penalty attempt saved, and Senegal subsequently netted the only goal during extra time.

In an initial disciplinary hearing, CAF imposed fines exceeding $1 million and suspensions on players and officials from both Senegal and Morocco, yet the match result remained unchanged.

This case may proceed to a further appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
