Rosenior: Fernández's suspension may have played a role in City's loss 1

Liam Rosenior indicated that Chelsea’s choice to suspend Enzo Fernández for two matches “possibly” hindered the team’s chances against Manchester City, following a 3-0 loss at Stamford Bridge that left his squad four points behind in the race for Champions League qualification.

Enzo, who serves as Chelsea’s vice-captain, received an internal suspension from the club after remarks that seemed to suggest an interest in joining Real Madrid. He served his suspension against City after also missing last week’s FA Cup quarterfinal victory over Port Vale.

In the absence of the Argentina midfielder, Chelsea found it difficult to match Pep Guardiola’s title-contending team, and coach Rosenior acknowledged that the suspension might have negatively impacted the team’s performance.

“Possibly,” Rosenior stated. “Possibly, in hindsight, you see 20-20 in hindsight. Enzo’s a top player and he’s a top character, and I’m eager to have him back next week.

“At times, decisions are made not solely for the short-term, but rather with a long-term vision in mind.

“And it was a long-term decision that I, along with the directors and the club, aligned with the leadership group of players to ensure that our values and culture are positioned correctly for the long haul.

“However, Enzo has engaged in the necessary discussions. He has been exceptional in the past few days in supporting me and the team, and I am looking forward to having him back in the squad.”

Chelsea’s upcoming match is against third-placed Manchester United at Stamford Bridge next Saturday, a game that has become crucial for the Blues to maintain viable hopes of qualifying for the next season’s Champions League.

“At this moment, we are still in the race for the Champions League,” Rosenior remarked. “And we still have the chance to win the FA Cup.

“But I need to secure victories at this time. This is a significant football club. When I first arrived, I did not request a lot of time because I comprehend this club. I recognize its traditions and history.

“I would appreciate having that time, and I am confident that during that period, something very, very special can be developed, similar to what Pep or Jürgen Klopp experienced when they won titles at Liverpool; they had a year to establish their plans.

“I joined in January. This is not an excuse; it is a reality. I need to achieve results now, and that is where my focus will be.

“I am not a manager who shies away from the need to address the situation with other players in the transfer market. I need to change the results immediately. That is why I am here.

“We must continue to work and strive for improvement. I need to make the right team selections that balance our attacking play while also enhancing our defense in critical moments, and that will be our focus.”
