Pep Guardiola: Klopp's Liverpool presents a greater challenge than Real Madrid 1

Pep Guardiola has stated that the “greatest challenge” of his coaching career was Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool, rather than Real Madrid, following Manchester City’s 5-1 aggregate defeat to the Spanish team in the Champions League round of 16.

Vinícius Júnior netted twice in Manchester, leading Madrid to a 2-1 victory in the second leg, after Federico Valverde’s hat trick secured a 3-0 win for the LaLiga club at the Bernabéu a week prior.

This marks the third consecutive season in which Guardiola’s City have been ousted by the 15-time European champions, but during his post-match press conference, the Catalan manager refuted the notion that Madrid have been his toughest opponents.

“No, my greatest challenge was Jürgen Klopp with Liverpool, during these years here,” Guardiola remarked to a Spanish reporter. “You were in Spain, you didn’t realize what that competition entailed.”

“It has been a valuable learning experience for the club, as this is a team that 12 or 13 years ago was not competing in Europe. Competing so frequently against Real Madrid, with the generation we’ve had, we’ve managed to do it.”

“They’ve triumphed, we’ve triumphed. The statistics are comparable; they’ve eliminated us more often than we have them. But they are aware of how we’ve performed.”

Guardiola has encountered Madrid 30 times throughout his career, initially during his four years with Barcelona in LaLiga, and subsequently in European tournaments with Bayern Munich and City.

The coach’s record against Madrid during this period stands at 14 victories, 6 draws, and 10 defeats.

However, in recent years, Madrid have eliminated City from the Champions League in 2022, 2024, 2025, and now 2026.

In 2023, Guardiola’s City defeated Madrid in the semifinals en route to achieving a historic treble. Guardiola’s head-to-head record against Klopp has been closely matched.

During their time in the Bundesliga, they faced each other eight times, with Guardiola winning four matches, Klopp winning three, and one match ending in a draw.

In the Premier League, Klopp narrowly edged ahead, winning eight matches, losing six, and drawing eight.

However, while both managers were at the helm of City and Liverpool, Guardiola secured six titles, in contrast to Klopp’s one.

Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was an integral part of those Liverpool teams before transferring to Madrid last summer.

“It was great to win here, to get one over on them,” he told Prime Video Sport.

“They’ve taken many Premier League medals away from me and Liverpool. I’ve always enjoyed playing here; I’ve always felt these are the biggest matches, City are a top club. Our mindset was to come here and win.”

Madrid will face either Bayern Munich or Atalanta in the quarterfinals, with Bayern having won the first leg 6-1, while City must now prepare for Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Arsenal.
