Pep Guardiola dismisses speculation about departure while highlighting promising future for Man City

MANCHESTER, England — Pep Guardiola dismissed inquiries regarding whether he has coached his final Champions League match and stated that Manchester City has a “promising future” despite their elimination by Real Madrid.
City fell 2-1 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate, marking their exit from Europe at the hands of Real Madrid for the third consecutive year.

With uncertainty surrounding Guardiola’s tenure at the Etihad Stadium beyond the summer, it raises the possibility that the Catalan manager has overseen his final match in the tournament he has triumphed in three times.
However, when questioned about his future, the 55-year-old chose not to reveal any specifics and instead focused on City’s outlook for the upcoming season.
“Oh, everyone wants to sack me, right?! Oh my goodness, folks!” Guardiola remarked.
“One day I will come here and say, ‘goodbye, everyone!’ And yet I’m still here, with one more year on my contract.
“The future looks bright, and we will return next season.”
City began positively against Real Madrid but struggled to recover after Bernardo Silva was sent off midway through the first half.
Silva received a red card for handling Vinícius Júnior’s shot on the goal line.
The Brazilian converted the penalty and scored again in stoppage time after Erling Haaland had equalized just before the break.
“It is not a mistake, a red card, the first of his career; it is a reaction,” Guardiola said when asked about Silva’s dismissal.
“It could have been avoided. OK, let’s say we score a goal and play 11 against 11. I will never blame my player for that.
“The sentiment is that I would have loved to continue with the way we started and played; I would have preferred to play 11 against 11, but football unfolds as it does.
“Madrid is an exceptional team that punishes you for your errors.”
Despite needing three goals in the second half, Guardiola substituted Haaland with over 30 minutes remaining.
Guardiola confirmed afterward that the choice was tactical and that Haaland is expected to be fit for the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal on Sunday.
“If we had scored in the second half, we had several opportunities to score in the opening minutes, but I wanted fresh legs and different players,” Guardiola clarified.
