LIMA, Peru — Authorities have reported that at least one individual has died and 60 others sustained injuries during what appeared to be a crush of fans at a well-known soccer team’s stadium in the Peruvian capital on Friday night.

According to police, officers assisted individuals who were trapped due to the surge of Alianza Lima supporters in the south stands of the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, occurring the night prior to their team’s anticipated match against their primary rival, Universitario.

Previously, the Ministry of Health had indicated that a wall within the stadium had collapsed. However, both the police and Alianza Lima issued separate statements refuting this claim.

Fire brigadier Marcos Pajuelo confirmed that there was at least one death and numerous injured individuals who were transported to hospitals in the capital. He stated that the cause of the incident remains unknown.

Footage aired by local television networks depicted a substantial crowd of fans in the south stands amid a display of fireworks. Additional videos showed seemingly injured individuals seated in the stands inside the stadium.

The Ministry of Health reported that 60 individuals have been documented as injured thus far.
