Newell’s Old Boys are developing a plan to attract Lionel Messi to join the club in the early part of 2027.

This initiative was announced by the first vice president of the Argentinian club, Juan Manuel Medina, who stated: “It’s a project that transcends Newell’s. It encompasses the city of Rosario, the province, and Argentine football.”

Messi, who was part of Newell’s youth teams until he transferred to Barcelona at the age of 13, signed a contract extension in October to stay with Inter Miami until the conclusion of the 2028 season.

The concept of viewing Messi as a long-term strategic objective began to develop in 2024.

Newell’s aims to establish a comprehensive framework that integrates political, social, and sporting elements to persuade Messi to return in a manner that extends beyond the pitch.

The strategy would involve enhancing the club’s infrastructure, fostering a competitive sporting atmosphere, and ensuring the institutional conditions suitable for a globally significant figure.

Reports suggest that informal discussions have already occurred with Messi’s close associates, although no tangible advancements or definitive decisions have been made.

Messi, 38, joined Inter Miami in July 2023 and has played a pivotal role for the team. He led Miami to their inaugural trophies — the Leagues Cup in 2023, the Supporters’ Shield in 2024, and the MLS Cup last season.

Messi, who is anticipated to captain Argentina at the World Cup this summer, has not indicated when he plans to retire from football. Newell’s believes that a return to the club would represent the perfect conclusion to the career of the 2022 World Cup winner.
