Newcastle versus Sunderland match halted following discrimination allegation 1

The match between Sunderland and Newcastle was interrupted following allegations of discriminatory behavior aimed at Lutsharel Geertruida.

The Premier League Match Centre announced on social media: “The encounter between Newcastle United and Sunderland was briefly halted during the second half due to a report of discriminatory abuse from the audience, directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida. This action aligns with the Premier League’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol.

“The occurrence at St James’ Park will undergo a thorough investigation. We extend our complete support to the player and both clubs.

“Racism has no place in our sport, or anywhere in society. We will persist in collaborating with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are inclusive and welcoming for everyone.”

Referee Anthony Taylor stopped the game in the 52nd minute for a three-minute duration due to the incident. At that moment, Newcastle was leading 1-0, following an early goal from Anthony Gordon.

However, Chemsdine Talbi equalized, and Brian Brobbey secured a late winner for Sunderland.

One individual was arrested prior to the Premier League match on Sunday between Sunderland and Newcastle, as confirmed by Northumbria Police.

Social media images before the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park depicted fans from both teams gathering on their way to the venue, prompting Northumbria Police to announce an “increased police presence” throughout the city.

“We are aware of several videos circulating on social media showing Newcastle United and Sunderland supporters taunting each other,” a spokesperson for Northumbria Police stated.

“Overall, cooperation has been observed, and we can report that one arrest was made before kick-off. We will maintain an increased police presence in the city center.”
