Newcastle manager Eddie Howe: ‘The game is determined on the field, not by finances’

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has emphasized that “football is played on the pitch — not with the money” in anticipation of Sunday’s match against Aston Villa.
This encounter features two clubs outside the ‘big six’ that have been competing in both the Premier League and European competitions in recent years. Ahead of their league meeting at St James’ Park, Unai Emery’s side currently sits third in the standings, while the Magpies are in pursuit of European qualification.
Although both teams have demonstrated their capabilities on the field, they have also been impacted by the league’s profitability and sustainability regulations (PSR). Howe is determined to let football determine league standings rather than financial considerations.
When asked if the Premier League feels less exclusive now or if teams with larger wage budgets hold an advantage, Howe responded: “I have never believed that finances should and can dictate the league table, although many will argue that teams with the highest wage bills will ultimately secure the top positions.”
“There are those much more knowledgeable than I who claim that wage bills reflect league standings, but I cannot adopt that mindset. We must think differently and seek ways to win matches that challenge the established order and achieve the highest possible finish.”
“That has always been my conviction, and it has been my belief since I began my managerial career. Football is played on the pitch — not with the money.”
The Deloitte Football Money League was released earlier this week, revealing Liverpool as the highest-earning English club for the first time, while Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Tottenham, and Chelsea all featured in the top 10.
Aston Villa was ranked 14th, and Newcastle 17th, with West Ham making it into the top 20. Howe highlighted the significance of enhancing revenue for future growth.

He stated: “I found the money leagues interesting to review yesterday. They provide valuable insights for us, as they indicate we have considerable progress to make in terms of revenue. I understand that people may be tired of hearing about it, but it is a reality.”
“Increasing our revenues is crucial, and I am aware that significant efforts are being made behind the scenes to achieve this.”
“I have always believed that, regardless of your circumstances, you must strive to exceed your resources. You need to aim for overachievement. It is essential to extract every bit of energy and effort from the squad you possess.”
“We are confident that we can still accomplish remarkable things, irrespective of any financial limitations we face. We will aim for the highest possible outcomes. I am hesitant to specify what that will be, but we will pursue the maximum.”
