Napoli faced boos from its supporters after suffering a 2-0 defeat at home against Lazio on Saturday, a result that allowed Inter Milan to take a significant step toward securing the Serie A title next week.

Matteo Cancellieri and Toma Basic found the net for Lazio, which might have increased its lead had a penalty not been saved and several other chances not been squandered.

Inter can secure the league title if it triumphs over Torino next Sunday and Napoli does not overcome struggling Cremonese two days prior. AC Milan still has the potential to postpone Inter’s celebrations, but it must win its next two fixtures, against Hellas Verona on Sunday and at home against Juventus the following week.

Inter, which defeated Cagliari on Friday, is currently 12 points ahead of Napoli and 15 points clear of Milan. Five rounds remain after this weekend.

Lazio started strongly in Naples, taking the lead in the sixth minute when Kenneth Taylor advanced down the left and set up a relatively unmarked Cancellieri to score.

Lazio could have extended its advantage in the 31st minute when Tijjani Noslin was brought down by Stanislav Lobotka in the box, but penalty expert Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saved the ensuing penalty from Mattia Zaccagni, who then sent the rebound over the bar from close range.

After missing additional opportunities, Lazio finally secured a second goal in the 57th minute. Nuno Tavares sped down the left and delivered a pass to Cancellieri, who mishandled it, but it fortuitously fell to teammate Toma Basic, who scored.

This marked Napoli’s first home defeat in Serie A this season.
