The conclusion of the European soccer season is rapidly approaching, and the contests for significant titles, UEFA Champions League spots, and relegation are intensifying.

This is the current status across the English Premier League, Spanish LaLiga, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, and French Ligue 1. This article will be updated weekly until the season’s final day, so please return often for the most recent updates.

Title contenders: Arsenal, Manchester City

There is a case to be made that the Premier League title could be determined on April 19. On that date, Arsenal and Manchester City will clash at the Etihad Stadium, where Mikel Arteta’s team could establish a seemingly insurmountable lead with a victory. However, the situation is not that straightforward.

City triumphed over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final on March 22, a result that some believe may provide them with a psychological advantage when the two teams meet again.

Currently, Arsenal holds the upper hand in the title race, boasting a nine-point advantage over City. Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola’s squad has a game in hand and could reduce that gap to just three points if they win that match as well as the encounter at the Etihad.

Before that, Arsenal will take on Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, while City will visit Chelsea on Sunday, with both outcomes influencing the dynamics leading up to the crucial match at the Etihad later this month.

Champions League race: Manchester United, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool

The Premier League is almost certain to receive an additional spot in the UEFA Champions League next season due to the UEFA club coefficient rankings. This position will be awarded to the team finishing fifth this season.

This development is favorable for Manchester United, Aston Villa, Liverpool , and Chelsea, who can now compete for this extra opportunity. However, at least one of these four clubs will not qualify for the Champions League next season (unless Liverpool or Aston Villa finish sixth or lower and succeed in their European competitions). Brentford and Everton, while two points further back, could also make an unexpected challenge for that spot.

Aside from Arsenal and City, United is in the strongest position to secure a Champions League berth, having achieved seven victories in 10 Premier League matches since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager. They maintain a seven-point cushion over sixth-placed Chelsea with seven games left, with Aston Villa just one point behind.

It is important to note that Liverpool will face United (A), Chelsea (H), and Aston Villa (A) in consecutive fixtures next month before concluding their season against Brentford (H).

Europa League / Conference League hopefuls: Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Brighton, Sunderland, Newcastle United, AFC Bournemouth

The team that misses out on the Champions League is likely to qualify for the Europa League or Conference League instead. Additionally, there will be other opportunities available for the clubs just below them.

Brentford has the second-smallest stadium (17,250 capacity) in the Premier League, yet they are aiming to participate in Europe for the first time next season. Under manager Keith Andrews, Brentford is only 13 points shy of their all-time best total (59) achieved under Thomas Frank in 2022-23.

Meanwhile, Everton has shown more stability under manager David Moyes. The Scot previously led them to Champions League qualification in 2004-05, and he could potentially guide them back to European competition in his second tenure at the club.

While Brentford and Everton are best positioned to secure Europa League participation, only four points separate them from 13th-placed Bournemouth.

The allocation of European spots depends on the outcomes of various cup competitions. If Leeds and Southampton do not win the FA Cup, then sixth and seventh will likely secure a place in the Europa League, with eighth earning a spot in the Conference League.

This arrangement could change if an English club triumphs in one of the three European tournaments this season.

Relegation battle: Wolves, Burnley, West Ham United, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United

For two consecutive seasons, the three teams promoted from the Championship were relegated immediately the following year. However, this year, that will not be the case. Newly promoted Sunderland has already reached the crucial safety benchmark of 40 points, ensuring their place in next season’s Premier League is secure. Yet, at least six teams remain uncertain.

At the bottom of the standings are Wolves, whose recent improvement has helped them avoid comparisons with the Premier League’s worst-ever team, the 2007-08 Derby County. Still, they face a near certainty of relegation. The same applies to newly promoted Burnley, who are 10 points adrift of safety, and the last time a team overcame such a deficit with nine matches remaining was Leicester City in 2014-15. Interestingly, they went on to win the title the following season.

One of West Ham, Tottenham, and Nottingham Forest is likely to finish in 18th place, although Leeds could also be drawn into the fray. Spurs made the decision this month to dismiss interim manager Igo Tudor and appointed Roberto De Zerbi, giving the Italian coach a five-year contract. This long-term approach addresses an immediate concern, but will it prove effective?

Title contenders: Barcelona, Real Madrid

Barcelona has established a solid seven-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of the standings, but the title is not yet settled. The two teams are scheduled to meet for another ClΓ‘sico on May 10, and a Madrid victory away could create a tense finish to the season.

Other potential challenges for the Blaugrana include hosting Celta Vigo on April 22, a trip to Getafe on April 25, and facing Real Betis at home on May 17.

Champions League race: AtlΓ©tico Madrid, Villarreal, Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad, Getafe

AtlΓ©tico Madrid and Villarreal are virtually assured of top-four finishes, holding a 13-point advantage over Real Betis, but a fifth Champions League position could still be contested. UEFA allocates five Champions League spots to the two countries whose clubs perform best overall in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, using a coefficient score for each nation.

Spanish clubs are excelling in Europe, with six teams still competing across the three tournaments (at least twice as many as any other nation trailing in the coefficient rankings).

This potential fifth spot opens the door for Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad, and Getafe to qualify for the Champions League. The first two clubs are also quarterfinalists in the Europa League, and winning that tournament would secure them a Champions League berth if they do not finish in the top five in LaLiga.

Europa League / Conference League hopefuls: Osasuna, Espanyol, Athletic Club, Girona, Rayo Vallecano, Valencia

9. Osasuna (38 points, minus-1 goal differential)

10. Espanyol (38, minus-8)

11. Athletic Club (38, minus-11)

12. Girona (37, minus-12)

13. Rayo Vallecano (35, minus-6)

14. Valencia (35, minus-11)

These clubs still have a slim chance to qualify for the Europa League or Conference League, although the number of teams they would need to surpass makes a midtable finish more likely. While Osasuna, Espanyol, and Athletic Club are tied on points, the inferior goal differentials of the latter two clubs place them in a more difficult situation.

Relegation battle: Alaves, Mallorca, Sevilla, Elche, Levante, Real Oviedo

15. AlavΓ©s (32, minus-11)

16. Mallorca (31, minus-12)

17. Sevilla (31, minus-13)

18. Elche (29, minus-9)

19. Levante (26, minus-16)

20. Real Oviedo (24, minus-27)

The relegation struggle appears set to go down to the wire, as only three points separate 15th-placed AlavΓ©s from Elche in 18th.

Bundesliga

Monitoring Europe's premier football leagues: Championship battles, UEFA Champions League, and relegation scenarios. 11

Title contenders: Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund

The title race is not yet concluded, but it would require a significant effort from Borussia Dortmund to surpass Bayern Munich. The Bavarians currently lead by nine points with six league matches remaining, along with a commanding goal differential advantage.

Champions League race: RB Leipzig, VfB Stuttgart, TSG Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen

The competition for the top four is particularly compelling, with four teams vying for two positions. The top six teams in Germany appear to be almost secured, as seventh-placed Eintracht Frankfurt trails Bayer Leverkusen by 10 points.

There remains a slim chance for Germany to secure a fifth Champions League spot, but it is far more likely that a team will need to finish in the top four.

Relegation battle: Werder Bremen, FC Cologne, St. Pauli, VfL Wolfsburg, Heidenheim

14. Werder Bremen (28, minus-18)

15. Cologne (27, minus-9)

16. St. Pauli (25, minus-20)

17. Wolfsburg (21, minus-25)

18. Heidenheim (16, minus-34)

At the bottom of the table, Heidenheim seems almost certain to be relegated, but the competition is otherwise intense. Wolfsburg currently occupies the other automatic relegation position, while St. Pauli would be in line to compete in the promotion/relegation playoff against the third-place finisher of the 2. Bundesliga.

Serie A

Monitoring Europe's premier football leagues: Championship battles, UEFA Champions League, and relegation scenarios. 13

Title contenders: Internazionale, Napoli, AC Milan

Inter Milan has a seven-point lead (along with a significantly better goal differential) over defending champions Napoli, with AC Milan closely trailing. All three are comfortably positioned within the Champions League spots.

Champions League race: Como, Juventus, AS Roma, Atalanta

The unexpected contender in the top-four race is undoubtedly Como, who are two seasons removed from competing in Serie B. To maintain their Champions League status for next season, they must fend off two of Italy’s giants (Juventus and Roma) along with a regular participant in European competitions (Atalanta).

Relegation battle: Fiorentina, Cagliari, Cremonese, Lecce, Hellas Verona, Pisa

15. Fiorentina (32, minus-8)

16. Cagliari (30, minus-12)

17. Cremonese (27, minus-20)

18. Lecce (27, minus-22)

19. Hellas Verona (18, minus-31)

20. Pisa (18, minus-32)

Two of the three relegated teams appear to have already been determined, as Pisa and Hellas Verona are nine points behind safety. Fiorentina is the most surprising team in the bottom six, having struggled throughout the 2025-26 season after four consecutive years finishing in the top eight of Serie A.

Ligue 1

Monitoring Europe's premier football leagues: Championship battles, UEFA Champions League, and relegation scenarios. 15

Title contenders: Paris Saint-Germain, Lens

There are no surprises regarding who leads Ligue 1 this season. Paris Saint-Germain has claimed the last four French titles and is well-positioned to secure a fifth consecutive championship. They will increase their lead over second-placed Lens to seven points if they win their game in hand.

In France, the top three finishers earn a place in next season’s Champions League group stage, while the fourth-placed team will enter the Champions League qualification playoffs. Lens, even if they do not clinch the title, appears likely to participate in the group stage, while Marseille, AS Monaco, Lyon, and Stade Rennais are competing for the final two spots.

Relegation battle: Le Havre, Nice, Auxerre, Nantes, Metz

14. Le Havre (28, minus-13)

15. Nice (27, minus-22)

16. Auxerre (23, minus-14)

17. Nantes (18, minus-21)

18. Metz (15, minus-35)

Similar to the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 automatically relegates its bottom two teams, with the 16th-placed club entering a playoff against the third-placed team from Ligue 2. Currently, Auxerre would be the team participating in the two-legged playoff.
