Major League Soccer has suspended Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner without pay until June 1, 2026, for breaching the policies and standards of professional conduct expected of league and club leadership.

A report from The Guardian indicated that Tanner utilized sexist and anti-gay language in the workplace and was also reported for making racist remarks concerning Black players, coaches, and referees. The allegations were documented in a complaint submitted by the MLS Player’s Association to the league.

MLS had previously investigated the claims but closed the case after being unable to substantiate the initial allegations. However, following the publication of The Guardian’s report, the league announced that the investigation would be reopened.

Tanner was subsequently placed on administrative leave on November 19, 2025, when MLS resumed its inquiry into the allegations of inappropriate and insensitive remarks attributed to the Union’s sporting director.

“Following the conclusion of an investigation carried out by the law firm Littler Mendelson, Major League Soccer has suspended Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner without pay until June 1, 2026,” the league stated in a news release.

“Based on new information acquired during the independent review by outside counsel, the investigation confirmed violations of MLS policies and standards of professional conduct required of League and Club leadership.”

MLS also disclosed that Tanner is required to complete a league-approved restorative practices program prior to being reinstated in his role.

Tanner began his tenure with the Philadelphia Union as sporting director in 2018 and signed a contract extension with the club in 2021.
