Mikel Arteta: Arsenal facing 'challenging phase' following unexpected FA Cup defeat 1

Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta recognized that his squad is experiencing their initial challenging phase of the season following a surprising defeat to second-tier Southampton in the FA Cup quarterfinals, just two weeks after their loss in the English Carabao Cup final.

A disappointing 2-1 defeat at St. Mary’s Stadium has left Arsenal with only the Premier League and Champions League as potential trophies to pursue.

A knee injury to Gabriel MagalhΓ£es, who was substituted in the second half, compounded the difficulties for Arteta, who indicated that some players took to the pitch against Southampton despite dealing with their own fitness issues.

However, Arteta was not inclined to criticize his team.

“I have great affection for my players and what they have accomplished over the past nine months,” he stated. “What should I do now? Criticize them for losing a match in the way they tried and for how hard they are pushing themselves? Some of them likely shouldn’t have even played today.

“No, I will not do that. I will support them more than ever. If anyone needs to take responsibility, it is me, and we have the most exciting part of the season ahead of us.

“This is a moment in the season — there are always moments, typically two or three. This is the first moment we are facing with a certain level of challenge.”

Ross Stewart put in-form Southampton ahead following a sequence that involved errors from Martin Ødegaard and Ben White, with Leo Scienza striking the crossbar before substitute Viktor Gyâkeres equalized for Arsenal.

Nevertheless, it is Southampton who will advance to Wembley later this month for the FA Cup semifinals after Shea Charles came off the bench to secure a notable 2-1 quarterfinal win.

After winning the trophy four times in seven seasons, including during Arteta’s inaugural campaign, Arsenal has now gone six seasons without claiming the FA Cup.

“I am really disappointed with how we lost the chance to return to Wembley,” Arteta remarked.

Arsenal will face Portugal’s Sporting CP — the least formidable team remaining — in the Champions League quarterfinals within the next 10 days and currently holds a nine-point advantage in the Premier League as the club seeks its first trophy since 2020.

Arsenal has finished as runners-up in the league for the past three seasons and was eliminated in the semifinals of the Champions League last year.

“When I mention difficulty, we are about to compete in the Champions League quarterfinals and the league run-in,” Arteta continued. “It is a challenging period, but I believe that many other situations are far more difficult.

“So, rise up, take responsibility, and perform as we have throughout the season.”

Gabriel was observed with an ice pack on his knee after being substituted in the 72nd minute. He had missed Brazil’s matches during the recent international break due to fitness concerns.

“I think he felt something,” Arteta commented regarding his key defender. “I am not sure what it is; we will need to evaluate him. However, when a player requests to be substituted, it is never a positive sign.”
