Michael Carrick: Manchester United squad will remain 'level-headed' 1

Michael Carrick has assured that his Manchester United players will remain grounded despite their impressive recent performance as they aim for a return to the Champions League.

United climbed to third place following their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday, marking their sixth win in seven matches since Carrick took charge in mid-January, and they currently boast the best form in the league since his appointment.

The task for Carrick is to sustain this momentum, considering the number of teams still competing for Champions League qualification.

“Football is a challenging sport when it comes to achieving results,” Carrick stated. “It’s not merely about guarding against [a decline in form], but rather living in the moment, remaining focused, and understanding what it takes to secure victories.

“We won’t become complacent; it’s essential to draw from our confidence and recognize that winning streaks are difficult to maintain. We are eager for more and must strive to prolong this success and maintain consistency.”

When Carrick joined, United was in seventh place, having secured only two wins in their last eight league outings, and the turnaround has been impressive.

“I wouldn’t describe it as a surprise,” Carrick responded when asked if they had surpassed his expectations. “You always aim to win matches. It’s about recognizing the challenges, but not looking too far ahead. Every match is winnable.

“I didn’t get ahead of myself regarding what was achievable at [the beginning]. We needed to get to work promptly, implement our strategies, and ensure that we provided the players with the right information and balance for the upcoming games; that was the priority.

“I know some of the players better than others, but now I’ve become familiar with everyone, and it’s a really strong group. In terms of talent and ability, the players have demonstrated their capabilities.

“Additionally, there is the aspect of fostering good habits and behaviors, and genuinely supporting one another. There are moments when we must dig deep and exhibit that strong spirit and camaraderie. I cannot speak highly enough of the players at this time.”

United’s chances of European qualification are firmly within their control, with Aston Villa and Liverpool still set to visit Old Trafford this season, while United will travel to Chelsea in mid-April.

Carrick emphasized that he is focused solely on Wednesday’s match at St James’ Park, where he hopes to have Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire available following illness.

“I believe it is crucial that we remain present and concentrate on our tasks,” he remarked. “It is an exceptionally challenging venue to secure a result in Newcastle.

“We are not looking too far ahead. We recognize our current standing. I think the weekend’s performance was a positive step for us, and it brings a significant boost, whether in terms of energy, confidence, or overall belief.

“I think we are in a favorable position, and we have earned it. The players have worked hard for it, and we must capitalize on this moving forward.”
