Matarazzo acknowledges Real Sociedad's Copa victory: 'This is only the start' 1

Over 100,000 supporters filled the streets of San Sebastian, Spain, on Monday to commemorate Real Sociedad’s Copa del Rey victory from the previous weekend — marking the team’s first significant trophy since 2021.

Real Sociedad triumphed over Atlético Madrid in a penalty shootout on Saturday to claim the title, representing a significant achievement for American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, who secured his first trophy just four months after assuming control of the team. This victory made him the first U.S.-born manager to win a major European competition.

Matarazzo received one of the day’s most enthusiastic receptions. He further won over the local fans by delivering a speech in Euskara, the regional language of the Basque Country.

“We are champions! I will attempt to do this in Basque, so I apologize for any errors I may make,” Matarazzo stated from the balcony of San Sebastian’s town hall. “What a fantastic beginning on this journey we are embarking on together. I believe this is merely the start! With your support, these players can accomplish many remarkable feats.”

The “Blue and White” supporters chanted “Rino, Rino, Rino Matarazzo,” to which the New Jersey native replied that no one lifted the trophy “as high as I have,” referencing his 6’6″ stature and the pride he feels.

Another peak moment of joy occurred when club captain Mikel Oyarzabal lifted the trophy. The Spain striker expressed gratitude to the fans for their steadfast support, while the crowd frequently interrupted him with chants of “Ballon d’Or” in his honor.

“First of all, thank you very much for being here with us. It’s wonderful to see how happy you all look,” Oyarzabal remarked. “Here we are again, declaring that we are the champions of the Copa del Rey.”

Matarazzo — who previously managed Stuttgart and Hoffenheim in Germany — took the helm of Real Sociedad during a challenging period last December and has since guided them to seventh place in LaLiga, along with a major trophy.
