Marseille’s sporting director Benatia makes a comeback two days after resigning.

Marseille’s tumultuous season experienced another development on Tuesday as sporting director Medhi Benatia made a return to the club just two days after his resignation.
He stepped down on Sunday, shortly after the exit of coach Roberto De Zerbi. However, in a statement, the club’s American owner Frank McCourt announced that Benatia had consented to return until the end of the season to “oversee all sporting activities.”
As a result, club president Pablo Longoria will transition into a more institutional role “to represent Marseille within French and particularly European organizations,” the statement, which was circulated by various media outlets, noted.
Marseille played to a 2-2 draw at home against Strasbourg on Saturday, after initially leading 2-0, and currently sits 12 points behind leader Lens in fourth place. This draw followed a heavy 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain and an exit from the Champions League after a 3-0 defeat at Club Brugge, provoking a strong reaction from the supporters.
Benatia was reportedly loyal to De Zerbi, who departed three days following the disappointing PSG loss.
During Saturday’s match against Strasbourg, both stands behind the goals were empty as the club’s Ultras protested. One banner called for McCourt and Longoria to resign, accompanied by the phrase “all of your projects go up in smoke!”
Nine-time French champions Marseille have not secured a trophy since the now-defunct League Cup in 2012. The club realistically has only the French Cup to contend for, with a home match against Toulouse in the quarterfinals next month.
McCourt was anticipated to meet with some of the Ultras groups later on Tuesday, amid reports that Habib Beye would soon be appointed as coach.
A Marseille defender from 2003-07, Beye was dismissed by Rennes last Monday.
Marseille assistant coach Jacques Abardonado assumed interim responsibilities following De Zerbi’s exit.
