Liverpool set to face Wrexham at Yankee Stadium in July 1

Wrexham is set to face Liverpool in a preseason encounter at Yankee Stadium in July as the Welsh team continues its efforts to penetrate the U.S. market.

The club, owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, will participate in a series of matches against Leeds United, Sunderland, and the Merseyside club, with games scheduled across various American cities.

This marks Wrexham’s third U.S. tour, having previously traveled across the Atlantic in 2023, where they triumphed over Manchester United, and in 2024, when Chelsea required a late equalizer to secure a draw.

The July match will be the first occasion the team has played at the New York Yankees’ home ground.

“We are all eager to return to the U.S. as part of our preseason preparations,” stated Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson.

“We received fantastic support during our previous visits to the States, and we are excited to see our fans again while competing against three strong opponents in matches that will be crucial for our preparation for the 2026/27 season.”

Wrexham could potentially visit the U.S. as a Premier League club, having made a successful return to England’s second tier.

Parkinson’s team currently occupies sixth place in the Championship, with a three-match winning streak elevating them four points ahead of Southampton, their closest rivals for the final playoff position.

The last encounter between Wrexham and Liverpool occurred nearly two decades ago, in a friendly at the Racecourse Ground in 2007.

The most recent competitive match between the two teams dates back to 1978, when a hat trick from Kenny Dalglish led Liverpool to a 3-1 victory in the League Cup.

Wrexham’s opening game of the tour will take place against Leeds at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium on July 25.

The highlight match is scheduled four days later at Yankee Stadium, followed by the Welsh side concluding their series on August 2 with a match against Sunderland in McElhenney’s hometown at Subaru Park, home of Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union.

Liverpool will face Sunderland at Nashville’s GEODIS Park on July 25, with their final match occurring at Soldier Field in Chicago against Leeds on August 2.
