Liverpool has shown interest in acquiring Netherlands international Lutsharel Geertruida on loan from RB Leipzig, according to sources speaking to ESPN.

Currently, Geertruida is on a season-long loan with Premier League club Sunderland, but discussions are underway to explore the possibility of terminating that agreement to facilitate a January transfer to Anfield.

Sources informed ESPN that the 25-year-old is among the players being considered as Liverpool aims to strengthen their defense ahead of the transfer window closing on Monday.

This season, Liverpool has faced numerous defensive injuries, with Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, while Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong are also unavailable.

Geertruida primarily plays as a right back but is also capable of functioning as a center back or in midfield, making his adaptability a significant advantage for Liverpool as they strive for a top-four finish this season.

Geertruida previously played under Liverpool head coach Arne Slot for three seasons at Feyenoord, where he served as captain before transferring to Leipzig in 2024.
