Liverpool has activated the 12-month extension option for goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s contract, sources have informed ESPN.

Alisson’s agreement with the club was set to conclude this summer, but he is now secured through the end of the 2026-27 season.

The Brazilian was absent from Tuesday’s Champions League loss to Galatasaray in Istanbul due to a minor issue incurred during training, but head coach Arne Slot remains optimistic that the 33-year-old will be ready to return for Sunday’s match against Tottenham.

He arrived at Liverpool from Roma in 2018 under then-manager Jürgen Klopp and, along with centre-back mainstay Virgil van Dijk, was a crucial component of the team’s Champions League and Premier League triumphs under Klopp and subsequently under Slot last season.

Liverpool will now benefit from that experience in goal for an additional season.

Prior to the match against Spurs on Sunday, Slot has encouraged his players to “maximize” their efforts for the remainder of the season but acknowledged that he is uncertain about what that will entail.

“What I want is for every single player to extract the maximum from every training session and the games we are playing from now until the end of the season,” Slot stated ahead of facing a Spurs side struggling for form.

Carragher after Liverpool loss: They are a ‘million miles off’

“That is my objective, and it should be the players’ objective as well, as that is the only way to fully utilize what is available to us.

“What that will specifically look like is not always easy to predict in advance, as sometimes a bit of luck is required.”
