Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has expressed his disappointment regarding his lack of dedication to his education during his youth, especially in learning English.

The captain of Argentina and 2022 World Cup champion acknowledged that he often felt “half ignorant” when interacting with notable figures throughout his distinguished career due to his inability to communicate effectively.

“I regret many things,” Messi, 38, shared on the Mexican podcast ‘Miro de Atras.’

“Not having learned English as a child is one of them. I had the opportunity to study English, but I did not take it. I truly regret that.

“I found myself in situations with remarkable and extraordinary individuals where I could have engaged in conversation, yet I felt half ignorant.

“I often thought: ‘What a fool, how I squandered my time.’

“When you are young, you do not realize it. Today, I emphasize to my children the significance of obtaining a solid education, studying, and being prepared.

“I consistently encourage my children to make the most of their opportunities. They are in a different position than I was, although I never lacked anything…”

Messi moved to Barcelona from his hometown of Rosario at the age of 13.

“My final year of school in Argentina was a disaster,” he admitted.

“I was aware that I was leaving [for Barcelona]. At Barcelona, I completed my high school education alongside the other children who attended [Barcelona’s youth academy] La Masia.”

Additionally, Messi, who joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023 after spending two years at Paris Saint-Germain, stated that football has imparted other significant lessons to him.

“I managed to achieve everything and reach the pinnacle [in football], but throughout that journey, I encountered numerous experiences and learned many lessons,” the eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient remarked.

“It is true that football is a way of life. It teaches you a great deal, instills many values, and fosters lifelong friendships. You get to explore different places.”
