Liam Rosenior: ‘No concerns’ regarding Chelsea goalkeepers despite mistakes

Chelsea’s head coach Liam Rosenior emphasized that he possesses adequate goalkeeping options following Filip Jørgensen’s significant mistake during his team’s 5-2 Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
Jørgensen was participating in only his second match after taking over from Robert Sánchez, who was sidelined due to a subpar performance in the defeat against Arsenal earlier in March. However, a poorly executed pass from the Dane in the 74th minute at the Parc des Princes enabled PSG to gain a 3-2 advantage.

Following that, the European champions launched an aggressive attack on Chelsea, whose confidence seemed to wane after falling behind for the third time that evening, undermining what had been a strong performance up to that point.
This incident has intensified scrutiny on the club’s goalkeeping situation. Throughout his two and a half years at Stamford Bridge, there have been doubts regarding Sánchez’s capabilities, while Jørgensen has also struggled to gain confidence.
West Ham expressed interest in acquiring Jørgensen in January, but Chelsea was reluctant to risk lacking competition for Sánchez.
Rosenior’s choice to bench the Spaniard after the defeat at the Emirates was unexpected, especially since he appeared to have minimized some of the errors that plagued his initial two years this season.
When asked if he believed he had goalkeepers of adequate quality for a club of Chelsea’s stature, Rosenior responded: “For sure. I made a decision to play Filip against Aston Villa [on March 4] and his performance was outstanding; he contributed to a very good win.
“His performance for 75 minutes [against PSG] was magnificent. He makes a mistake and we get punished, and we go on to lose in a manner we definitely shouldn’t have lost.
“Rob Sánchez is one of the best goalkeepers in the league. There’s no question about those two players’ quality.”
Rosenior now faces a significant decision regarding who will be in goal for Saturday’s home match against Newcastle.
When asked if Jørgensen was mentally prepared to start, he stated: “For sure. Everyone makes mistakes. It’s how you recover and respond to a setback. I’ve got no issues, no lack of trust with the two goalkeepers I have.”
Jørgensen’s evening in Paris worsened when he received a stern reprimand from vice-captain Enzo Fernández after another inaccurate pass resulted in PSG scoring a disallowed goal.
“If you play football in front of 60,000 people, adrenaline is coursing through your system and you want to win; you’re passionate,” said Rosenior. “I want players to hold each other accountable, always with respect. Then we sit down, we talk about it, and we work things through together in the dressing room.”
Pedro Neto has been handed a one-match suspension and fined £70,000 for failing to exit the pitch following his red card in the Arsenal defeat.
The winger found himself at the center of controversy once more in Paris when he pushed a ball boy, an action for which he quickly expressed regret, but which UEFA stated they are investigating.
“I’ve seen it back and it doesn’t look good,” said Rosenior. “I understand his perspective; he wants to get the ball back in play. There are appropriate ways to go about it.
“He wanted to apologize immediately. We make mistakes, but it’s about learning.”
