Laporta following Barcelona’s re-election: Opportunity remains for Messi

Joan Laporta stated that the opportunity for Lionel Messi to return to Barcelona remains available following his re-election as the club’s president until 2031.
Laporta won decisively against competitor Víctor Font in Sunday’s election, garnering 68.18% of the 48,480 votes cast by club members.
Font had emphasized Laporta’s strained relationship with Messi, repeatedly noting during the campaign that he had overseen the Argentine star’s departure in 2021 and unsuccessful return in 2023, but this was insufficient to influence the majority vote.
“Leo will be associated with Barcelona in whatever capacity he chooses,” Laporta told TV3 when questioned about the potential role of the Inter Miami CF forward during his tenure.
“He deserves a tribute [match] and a statue. That would be immensely significant. Only Ladislao Kubala and Johan Cruyff have statues at the stadium.”
“The doors at Barça are always open to him, whenever he desires, so that he can continue to enhance and contribute to the greatness of this institution.”
Messi was a focal point during the election campaign when former Barça coach Xavi Hernández labeled Laporta a “liar” and alleged he had obstructed the club legend’s return in 2023.
Font urged Messi to speak out and disclose the truth, but he opted to remain silent and allow the campaign to unfold naturally.
Messi, who netted 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barcelona, has consistently expressed his desire to return to the club at some point in the future.
In the meantime, Laporta has assured Barça supporters that they can look forward to the best years of their lives following his re-election.
Laporta, who is serving his second term as president after previously holding the position from 2003 to 2010, pointed to the team’s progress under Hansi Flick and the return to the renovated Spotify Camp Nou as reasons for optimism.
“To continue building a strong team with Flick as head coach and [sporting director] Deco,” Laporta told Mundo Deportivo when asked about the plans for the next five years.
“To win titles, which is what the fans cherish, but also to play attractively. And to complete the stadium midway through the mandate, as that ensures the club’s financial future and provides a venue suitable for showcasing performances on the pitch.”
“We also aim to keep the women’s team highly competitive and to continue growing economically. The best years of our lives are ahead.”
