In a highly awaited announcement on Tuesday, Kaizer Chiefs revealed the establishment of their women’s team, Kaizer Chiefs Ladies.

The team will be led by coach Unathi Mabena, embarking on their journey in the second-tier Sasol League. According to their statement, Chiefs had been in talks with Springs Home Sweepers — owned by former Chiefs player Joseph Mkhonza — since 2023, culminating in a formal partnership in 2025.

Tuesday’s announcement confirmed that the outcome was as anticipated, with arguably the most supported football club in South Africa acquiring the Gauteng Sasol League status from Sweepers. They will host home matches at both Kaizer Chiefs Village and Springs’ KwaThema Stadium.

Kaizer Chiefs chairman and founder Dr. Kaizer Motaung stated, as noted on the club’s website: “This is a proud moment for Kaizer Chiefs.”

“As a Club, we recognize the responsibility we hold within South African football, and this initiative demonstrates our dedication to advancing the game in a significant manner. Women’s football is a vital aspect of the future, and we are committed to being part of that journey.”

“When creating something of this nature, one must think beyond the immediate moment. It is essential to consider the generations that will follow and the responsibility that accompanies that. Kaizer Chiefs Ladies is part of a larger vision to ensure that the game continues to progress, to include more individuals, and to strengthen in the years to come.”

His daughter, Jessica Motaung — who serves as Kaizer Chiefs’ marketing and commercial director — remarked, as cited by the club website: “This is about creating genuine pathways for women in the sport.”

“The women’s game is experiencing rapid growth globally, and South Africa is part of that positive trend. We want female soccer players to see this team and recognize that there is a place for them within Kaizer Chiefs and in the international arena.”

Gaining corporate support for the initiative was always essential for ensuring its long-term viability, and Chiefs have secured backing from Brima Logistics. Jessica Motaung added: “We appreciate SAFA for their ongoing support and Brima Logistics for their dedication to this initiative.”

“Partnerships are crucial for building something that can develop and thrive over time. The role of corporate investment is significant as it contributes to the comprehensive development of the women’s game, providing the stability and confidence necessary to advance the sport at all levels.”

Chiefs Ladies’ 24-player roster features former Banyana Banyana midfielder Mamello Makhabane, alongside junior internationals Zanele Kunyamane and Katlego Mohale.

The journey ahead is extensive as they aim to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns’ supremacy in the women’s game in South Africa, but the first crucial step has been taken.
