Julian Brandt of Germany set to depart Borussia Dortmund this summer.

COLOGNE, Germany — Julian Brandt will depart Borussia Dortmund at the conclusion of the season.
Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken informed broadcaster Sky on Saturday that the club and the player have mutually decided not to renew Brandt’s contract, which is set to expire at the season’s end.
Ricken made these comments following Brandt’s assist on Maximilian Beier’s goal during Dortmund’s tense 2-1 victory against Cologne in the Bundesliga.
“There have been several reports, and it’s simply that there were open discussions, and everyone agreed that the expiring contract would not be renewed,” Ricken stated.
“He has played several hundred matches for Borussia Dortmund. We can only express our gratitude for his seven years with us. He faced criticism at times, but even today, with his assist, I appreciated his style.”
Brandt, who joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2019, will celebrate his 30th birthday on May 2. He has netted a total of 56 goals in 298 appearances for Dortmund.
“We can reorient ourselves a bit,” Ricken remarked. “This can be an opportunity for both parties, and it was acceptable for both of us. We ultimately came to an agreement, and I believe we are parting on respectful terms. But as I mentioned, it presents another opportunity for both sides.”
Brandt has represented Germany 48 times, but has not played since a Nations League match against Hungary in November 2024.
Ricken indicated that this decision would not affect the future of Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck at the club. Schlotterbeck’s contract is set to expire next year, and his future remains uncertain amid reported interest from Real Madrid and Liverpool.
Ricken also stated that Dortmund intends to offer team captain Emre Can a contract extension. The defender is sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL in his left knee.
