Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has expressed his belief that Mohamed Salah’s legacy in the Premier League surpasses that of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, with only Arsenal legend Thierry Henry ranking higher.

Carragher’s remarks followed Salah’s announcement on Tuesday regarding his departure from Liverpool at the conclusion of the season, after nine record-setting years with the club.

The Egyptian forward has played a crucial role in Liverpool’s achievements in recent seasons, securing a Champions League title and two Premier League championships among his accolades at the club.

Carragher has positioned Salah as second in the all-time “pantheon of overseas attacking players” in the Premier League.

“Mohamed Salah’s forthcoming exit from Liverpool signifies not only the conclusion of an exceptional era for the club,” he stated in his column for the Telegraph.

“Liverpool’s departure is a loss for English football. In the realm of overseas attacking players who have thrived in England, only Thierry Henry surpasses Salah’s output and consistency.

“While many may debate the merits of players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Bergkamp, or Eric Cantona, none have delivered the same remarkable statistics as consistently, season after season, as the Egyptian.

“In an all-time Premier League XI, Salah is an automatic selection in the front three alongside Henry and Ronaldo.”

Carragher further noted that Salah’s impact on JΓΌrgen Klopp’s successful era at Liverpool is a significant aspect of his career that should not be overlooked, with the 33-year-old being pivotal in the club’s turnaround when the German manager arrived.

“Whenever the remarkable, transformative JΓΌrgen Klopp era is recalled, Salah will always be associated with the triumphs that brought both Premier League and Champions League success,” he remarked.

“If Klopp was the charismatic and visionary director, Salah was the inspiring lead actor.

“Under Klopp’s leadership, and largely due to Salah’s brilliance, Liverpool swiftly transformed from a club merely aiming to qualify for the Champions League to one that genuinely believed it could win the competition every time it participated.

One of the defining features of Salah’s tenure at Liverpool has been his capacity to remain injury-free, a quality that Carragher greatly admires.

“In addition to his prolific goal-scoring and speed, there is another, often overlooked attribute that must always be acknowledged when discussing Salah’s rightful place among the elite,” he stated.

“It is his remarkable availability. Over nine seasons at the highest level, Salah has made 435 appearancesβ€”averaging just over 48 matches each year for his club.

“These figures are extraordinary considering the relentless physical and mental demands with which he and his team have competed for most of that time.

“Nothing impresses me more in the sport than world-class athletes who possess the determination never to miss a match.”
