Inter Miami CF has confirmed the acquisition of Mexico national team forward Germán Berterame from Liga MX club Monterrey.

Berterame joins Lionel Messi and the current MLS Cup champions as a Designated Player on a contract that extends through 2029, with an option for an additional year.

Miami finalized the agreement by activating Berterame’s $15 million release clause, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Lizzy Becherano.

The forward, who was born in Argentina and became a naturalized Mexican citizen in 2024, began his career in the Argentine Primera División with San Lorenzo and Patronato before making his Liga MX debut with Atletico San Luis in 2019. During his time with Atletico San Luis, he netted 31 goals in 93 matches across all competitions and won the Golden Boot for the 2021 Apertura tournament.

His performances in Liga MX garnered attention from the Mexican national team after he became eligible to play for El Tricolor. Although Berterame had previously represented the Argentina youth national team, his absence from the senior squad allowed him to switch allegiance to Mexico without needing to file a one-time switch with FIFA.

Berterame scored the decisive goal for Mexico last Sunday in a World Cup warm-up friendly against Bolivia.

Other MLS clubs had shown interest in Berterame prior to this move. FC Cincinnati made an attempt to activate the player’s former release clause, but the two sides could not reach an agreement to finalize the transfer.
