Individual who racially insulted Jess Carter receives suspended prison sentence. 1

A 60-year-old individual who shared racist remarks about England defender Jess Carter on social media has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Nigel Dewale, from Great Harwood, Lancashire, made two posts during Euro 2025 last summer from his TikTok account under the handle Bogeyman.

Dewale was “under the influence” at home when he reacted to a news article regarding police inquiries into online racial abuse previously directed at Carter following England’s matches against France and Sweden during the tournament.

The racist posts were subsequently linked to Dewale, who was arrested and charged.

On Wednesday, he received a sentence at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court of six weeks in custody, suspended for a period of 12 months.

He admitted guilt at a prior hearing for sending a grossly offensive message through a public communications network.

Carter, 28, who competes for NWSL team Gotham FC, was a member of the Lionesses squad that successfully defended their title at the tournament held in Switzerland.
