HULL, England — Hull City has announced that several arrests were made for discriminatory chanting during their 4-0 FA Cup fourth round loss to Chelsea on Friday.

An announcement over the public address system late in the first half indicated that there had been “discriminatory chanting inside the stadium,” and added that “we are utilizing CCTV to collect evidence. We will eject and report to the police anyone we identify as participating in criminal activity.”

A subsequent announcement approximately an hour into the match informed supporters that “action has been taken this evening, including arrests.”

A chant of “Chelsea rent boy” was heard earlier in the match from some home fans inside MKM Stadium.

In January 2022, the Crown Prosecution Service officially designated “rent boy” as an anti-gay slur and thus a hate crime. Individuals caught using the term may face prosecution under hate crime legislation.

Following the match, Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior stated: “Any discriminatory language in any form about anything is unacceptable, so I hope it gets addressed. The fourth official mentioned something to me, but I was so focused on the game. I honestly don’t know what’s happening.”

Chelsea secured a comfortable victory thanks to Pedro Neto’s hat trick and a goal from Brazilian winger Estêvão.
