Celtic beat Rangers 5-4 in the final to lift the Tennent’s Sixes trophy

After a 33-year hiatus, the Tennent’s Sixes tournament returned to Glasgow, putting a new spin on the once beloved tournament.

As Celtic became the new winners after a thrilling 5-4 win over Old Firm rivals Rangers in the final, taking the crown from Partick Thistle, who have held it since 1993, we’ve taken a look back at some of the highlights from a very vintage weekend.

Out of deep freeze

Well, not literally, but the six-a-side pitch was laid over the ice rink at Braehead Arena, which made for surprisingly chilly conditions.

The arena is usually the home of ice hockey team Glasgow Clan, but for one weekend, it was transformed into a football stadium.

And it was rather amusing watching players squeeze through the saloon-style door when subs were being made, or getting clattered with the ball from a subs bench that was practically on the ice.

Crunching tackles?

There weren’t a lot, in fact. It was perhaps a surprisingly tame weekend in terms of on-pitch rammies.

But Frazer Wright’s crunching tackle on Morgaro Gomis in St Johnstone game against Dundee United, which resulted in the former receiving a red card, was the only one of the weekend.

Indeed, it was reminiscent of something you’d see in a feisty Sunday league contest – at least until the final.

1990s MLS-style penalties

One of the highlights of the weekend was getting to watch sides have a go at penalties the old-fashioned, American way.

If a penalty was awarded, the player had 10 seconds, starting at the halfway line, to have a pop at goal.

Some went well, others not so much.

Derby bragging rights

Derby wins don’t come more convincing than Rangers’ 7-1 defeat of Celtic on Saturday night.

Led by Barry Ferguson, Martyn Waghorn’s five goals helped Rangers cruise to victory and make it three wins from three derbies for the Ibrox club – if you count the previous games in the Scottish Premiership and the League Cup.

Meanwhile, United and Hearts also headed home with bragging rights after winning their respective derbies.

However, Celtic would get their revenge in the final, Gary Hooper scoring the winner – amazingly, the first time Rangers had found themselves behind in the whole tournament.
