Gundogan describes his return to Manchester City with Galatasaray as ‘strange’

Former Manchester City captain Ilkay Gündogan expressed that it will feel “strange” and emotional to compete at the Etihad Stadium again as an opponent.
The captain of City’s 2023 treble-winning team returns to his old ground with Galatasaray for a crucial Champions League match on Wednesday.
The experienced German midfielder departed City last summer after being a vital part of Pep Guardiola’s dominant squad for eight of the last nine years.
“For me, this is a significant match, emotional,” stated the 35-year-old, whose achievements with City included five Premier League titles, a Champions League victory, and two FA Cups.
“I believe it will be somewhat strange, especially against my former teammates, a coach I have collaborated with, shared many memories with, and was very close to.”
“Playing again in this stadium, after so much success over so many years, will be very special, and I am eager for it.”
Galatasaray currently sits 17th in the standings as they approach the final match of the league phase and require a favorable outcome to keep their playoff aspirations within their control.
Gündogan remarked: “A challenging match lies ahead, but this is the Champions League – every match is tough, yet we possess the confidence and belief, and we have prepared thoroughly.”

Containing Erling Haaland will be essential for the Turkish team’s prospects.
The typically prolific Norwegian has netted only once in his last nine appearances, but Gündogan is aware of his potential threat.
He stated: “Never underestimate him. He is a goal-scoring machine, and we all recognize he has the capability to score as many goals as he desires in a match or an entire season.”
“It is nearly impossible to manage him for the full 90 minutes, but it is crucial not only to defend against him but also for the entire team to work collectively to prevent him from finding opportunities to score. That is one of the keys to achieving a positive result.”
Gündogan has been closely monitoring City, who are four points behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, and he is confident they can surpass the Gunners.
He mentioned: “Of course, I am keeping track of them. I remain a supporter of this club, this team, and this manager. I try to watch as many matches as I can.”
“I still believe they can overcome Arsenal. We all know that once this City team gains momentum, they can embark on a lengthy unbeaten streak.”
