Coventry City will make their return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years after achieving promotion from the Championship with a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Friday.

A founding member of the Premier League in the 1992-93 season, Coventry spent nine seasons in the top division but has not returned since their relegation in 2000-01.

The West Midlands club will now rejoin the elite after an impressive campaign in the second tier under manager Frank Lampard.

Lampard’s team required only a point from Friday’s encounter at Ewood Park to confirm promotion but appeared to be on the verge of defeat after Ryoya Morishita put Blackburn ahead, until Bobby Thomas headed in from a free kick in the 84th minute.

The equalizing goal and the subsequent final whistle triggered exuberant celebrations from the over 7,000 Coventry fans who filled the away section in Lancashire.

The Sky Blues experienced their lowest point when they fell to the fourth-tier League Two in 2017, but they have worked their way back, and after losing to Luton in the playoff final in 2023, they have dominated the Championship under Lampard this season, securing their Premier League return with three matches remaining.

They will need to wait to clinch the title, as second-placed Ipswich is now 11 points behind with five matches left to play.
