Flamengo has terminated its relationship with Filipe Luís, one of the most accomplished coaches in the club’s history.
The Brazilian team announced this decision following Monday’s 8-0 victory against Madureira, which allowed Flamengo to advance to the Carioca Championship final with an aggregate score of 11-0.
Nevertheless, the Rio de Janeiro side has experienced a dismal start to the season, marking its worst beginning in the past decade.
Flamengo lost the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians and was defeated by Argentina’s Lanús in the South American Recopa. Currently, they sit in 11th place in Brazil’s Serie A, having earned four points from their first three matches.
“Clube de Regatas do Flamengo announces that, effective this Tuesday, Filipe Luís will no longer lead the professional team,” stated a club announcement.
“Ivan Palanco [assistant coach] and Diogo Linhares [physical trainer] are also departing the club.
“Flamengo expresses gratitude to former player and coach Filipe Luís for all that was accomplished and shared during this time. The club wishes him success and the best in his future professional endeavors.”
The ex-Chelsea left-back joined Flamengo as a player in 2019 and contributed to the club’s collection of 10 trophies, including two Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores, before starting his coaching career in 2024.
He led Flamengo to 64 victories in 101 matches as head coach, suffering only 15 losses.

Filipe Luís, 40, had recently garnered interest from European clubs after successfully guiding Flamengo to the Brazilian Serie A title, the Copa Libertadores, the Campeonato Carioca, and the Brazil Supercopa in 2025.
However, he signed a two-year contract extension with Flamengo in December. Sources have informed ESPN that Flamengo is in discussions with Portuguese manager Leonardo Jardim to assume the role. Jardim has been without a position since departing Cruzeiro in December.
